Replacing broken keys on a Mac Keyboard (OSX)

Recently when I managed to break a key on my PowerBook G4 I didn't really know how the heck I was going to fix it.

I went back to the shop (Sofmap, Umeda, Osaka, Japan) where I bought the G4 (2nd hand) but the assistant I spoke to was totally unhelpful.

So I decided to go to the Apple Store (Shinsaibashi, Osaka) to see what could be done.

The first person I spoke to was rather unhelpful giving me wrong info, saying they couldn't help and I'd have to have the keyboard replaced at a cost of 20,000 Yen/200 GBP. That didn't make me very happy.

The following day I took my G4 in to ask again. I never believe the first answer if it's not what I want to hear. The guy on the 2nd floor help desk whisked away my G4 and brought it back 10 minutes later with the key replaced! AND they didn't charge me for it either. Apparently, if they hadn't had some spares laying around it would have been a different story.

That's why I decided to write this page, in the hope that it might help someone, sometime.

If you want to ask me about any of this please write to broken-mac-key[AT]eat78rpm.co.uk

Thank you Apple Store Shinsaibashi!
